Calling all Ottawa-area parents with cute babies between the ages of 0 and 2.5 years (and we all know your baby is the cutest, right?!)! Mini Maestro, a new Ottawa-based cloth diaper line created by a local Mom who was tired of leaks and bulky bottoms is looking for models whose images will be used in an upcoming promotional campaign. How does this model search work? I will be offering FREE mini-sessions between 10am and 4pm on August 17 & 18, 2010. Each session will be 15-30 minutes and result in 3-5 final edited images that will be posted in an on-line gallery. Participants will not only get special prices on prints but also a discount on these fabulous diapers. PLUS, one beautiful babe (and their lucky parents) will win a GRAND PRIZE package worth $400 that includes: one 8×10 print from the mini-session, one family portrait session to be scheduled in the Fall of 2010, one 11×14 mounted print from the family session AND one package of 3 Mini Maestro diapers in the size and colour of your choice.
Spaces are limited so please sign up ASAP by sending me an email and I’ll reserve a spot for your little one. If you can’t come do take a look at this great new product – as a Mom who used cloth diapers (my son just got potty trained in the last month – yay!), the difference to the environment and your pocket book is HUGE and so worth the initial investment and the few moments of holding your breath when throwing them in the wash.

Your Ottawa (and Kemptville!) Maternity and Baby Photographer,
Vanessa
It’s such an honour for me to be asked to capture the most amazing moments in someone’s life. Whether it’s a wedding, the wonder of pregnancy or falling completely, head-over-heals in love with a new baby, being able to freeze moments in time so when there are tougher days ahead in your marriage or battling toddler tantrums, you can look at the images and feel the same wave of love of you felt then and get strength from it – that to me is a priceless gift and the power of amazing photography. I recently had the pleasure of photographing a beautiful mom-to-be and a few weeks later, her beautiful baby girl. Here are some images from both sessions.
Meet Ishaan! At four weeks he was very alert. We couldn’t get him to curl up (already liked to stretch his legs out!) or stay asleep for very long. He was much too intrigued by what was going on around him with strobes flashing and camera shutters clicking away. What I love about a newborn portrait session is the unpredictability. Already, this tiny baby has a personality so there’s no such thing a cookie cutter posing! Not only that, but capturing the expressions of new parents who have just fallen madly in love with their child leaves me speechless every time. I get choked up just thinking about it! Love, love, love new babes…
I first found out about a local play group last February when my son was about 14 months old. I was so amazed that such a wonderful service existed for parents and caregivers of young children. And it was FREE! Even the snacks! The community centre where it takes place is also home to a local food bank. So for Halloween this year, I thought why not offer to take photos of all the kids and the only payment for a 4×6 print was a donation to the food bank. The centre was thrilled with the idea and I knew that for some, this may be the first time they would have a professional portrait of their child. It’s win-win all around. Sure it cost me my time and a few bucks for prints but the feeling you get from giving back is truly amazing and it seems so small in return for the many hours my son has enjoyed there. After the photo shoot and play group time, all the parents got a tour of the food bank to drop off our substantial collection and saw first hand what the volunteers there do and how it serves the community. More than 1000 people used it in the month of September and half of those were children. This is not in a developing country, but right here in Ottawa. It definitely opened my eyes and I hope to continue to give back in any way I can.
Your humble Ottawa portrait photographer,
Vanessa Dewson
P.S. My son is the one in the monkey suit – he only lasted about 30 seconds before the tears came and this was the best shot I could get… Who said photographing children was easy?
